Located approximately 10° north of the tropics, Costa Rica enjoys warm and consistent temperatures throughout the year. However, the country is home to a wide variety of microclimates influenced by elevation, rainfall, geography, and terrain. Monteverde is one of the best examples of a truly unique microclimate.
Costa Rica has two distinct seasons: the dry or “golden” season from early December to mid-May, and the green or rainy season from mid-May through November. The Caribbean coast experiences more rainfall year-round, with its driest months typically occurring in September and October.
Monteverde, located about 4,662 feet (1,444 meters) above sea level, sits along the Continental Divide, creating the perfect conditions for the clouds that surround its mountaintop forests. Moisture-filled winds rise through the mountains, forming clouds that bring the rainfall essential to sustaining the cloud forest ecosystem.
Although the driest months from January through April offer warmer temperatures and sunnier days, light rain showers can still occur, enhancing the lush green scenery. When summer rains clear, breathtaking rainbows often appear across Monteverde’s skies, creating unforgettable views.
The rainiest months, September and October, can make wildlife spotting more challenging as animals seek shelter in the dense forest. Trails may become muddier, but the cloud forest remains magical and beautiful no matter the weather.
Monteverde is considered one of Costa Rica’s premier birdwatching destinations, home to hundreds of resident and migratory bird species. Among the most famous are the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, Blue-crowned Motmots, Orange-bellied Trogons, Three-wattled Bellbirds, and the region’s vibrant hummingbirds.
March and April mark the peak season for spotting Resplendent Quetzals during their nesting and mating season. Bird enthusiasts often search for these magnificent birds near wild avocado trees while listening for the unmistakable call of the bellbird echoing through the forest.
With more than 450 bird species recorded by visitors and researchers, Monteverde transforms even casual travelers into passionate bird lovers, especially during nesting season.
In Costa Rica, the busiest travel season generally coincides with the dry season. During these months, more visitors arrive to explore Monteverde’s trails, zipline through the forest canopy, and discover the charm of nearby Santa Elena.
Fortunately, Monteverde offers countless nature reserves and outdoor adventures, making it easy to find peaceful and uncrowded experiences surrounded by nature.
